Communications report 2009-10

The ACMA Communications report 2009-10 fulfils the ACMA's statutory reporting requirements under section 105 of the Telecommunications Act 1997 to report to the Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy on significant matters relating to the performance of carriers and carriage service providers (CSPs) with particular reference to consumer satisfaction, consumer benefits and quality of service.

The report provides an overview of the Australian telecommunications industry performance against a range of regulatory obligations including compliance with safeguards such as the Customer Service Guarantee, the provision of emergency call services and compliance with codes and standards.

The ACMA Communications report 2009-10 provides a discussion on the developments in broadcasting, internet, radiocommunications and telecommunications industries and also examines how Australians are using digital communications and media to participate in the digital economy. In particular, a descriptive analysis of consumer benefits has been undertaken with commentary centring on the benefits that consumers and citizens are deriving from participation in the digital economy.

To complement the Communications report 2009-10, the ACMA has developed a suite of targeted reports. These four reports are aimed at the broader community and are designed to inform Australians about convergence and the digital economy and how they impact on communications and media services. These reports include:

  • Report 1-Australia in the digital economy: The shift to the online environment
  • Report 2-Take-up and use of voice services by Australian consumers
  • Report 3- Australian consumer satisfaction with communication services
  • Report 4- Changing business models in the Australian communication and media sectors: Challenges and response strategies.

Data in the Communications report 2009-10 and complementary report series are drawn from a range of sources including information reported by industry to the ACMA, the ACMA's research using third-party public sources and commissioned surveys and analysis.

The report was tabled in Parliament on 9 December 2010.
